One of the most memorable rescues of the year for the BC SPCA was a pregnant horse named Spirit rescued in Fort St. John. Spirit was found with lesions, welts, and hives on her body, especially on her chest, and was treated by a veterinarian before giving birth to a healthy foal named Journey.
The rescue of Spirit was a collaborative effort, involving a Conservation Officer who contacted the BC SPCA, a volunteer foster who transported Spirit to her farm, and the BC SPCA’s senior manager of Northern B.C. and the Kootenays, Jamey Blair. The BC SPCA highlighted this equine rescue to showcase their work with farmed animals and horses in addition to companion animals.
After being weaned, Journey was adopted to a farm on Vancouver Island, while her mother Spirit remains in foster care until she finds her forever home. The BC SPCA emphasized the importance of their efforts in finding forever homes for horses and other farmed animals, in addition to their work with companion animals.
