Hackney Horse Breed Declared Critical as Rare Breeds Survival Trust Reports Sharp Decline

The Hackney horse and pony breed is facing a critical decline, according to the 2026 Rare Breeds Survival Trust (RBST) watch list. The number of breeding dams producing registered offspring dropped by 41% from 2024 to 2025, and the breed’s genetic diversity has fallen well below the United Nations’ concern threshold. RBST and the Hackney Horse Society are intensifying conservation efforts to preserve this historically significant and versatile breed, emphasizing its value in showing, jumping, dressage, and harness work.

Similarly, the Cleveland Bay breed is experiencing a sharp decline in breeding numbers, attributed to economic challenges, adverse weather in 2024, and reduced international registrations. Despite these setbacks, there are positive signs for other native UK breeds like the Suffolk horse, Dales, Eriskay pony, and Exmoor, which show stable or increasing populations. RBST highlights the importance of these rare breeds for cultural heritage, genetic diversity, and modern equestrian roles, urging owners to participate in breeding programs to secure their future.
