Teton County Search and Rescue had a busier shoulder season in 2024, rescuing a higher percentage of women compared to previous years. The organization had fewer missions overall this year, but more people needed rescue in April, September, and October. The shift towards rescuing more women may be attributed to more women engaging in backcountry activities.
Young people, particularly those aged 16 to 30, accounted for a higher percentage of Search and Rescue missions this year compared to last year. Hikers were the group that needed rescue most frequently, followed by skiers, snowboarders, and snowmobilers. The organization had its second-highest call volume ever this year, with 130 calls for service since December.
Search and Rescue missions included a variety of operations, from short responses to more complex rescues in rugged terrain. The organization acquired its own helicopter last year, allowing them to assist partner rescue teams more effectively. TCSAR is currently accepting applications for new team members for 2025, emphasizing the importance of being a team player in the organization.
