Maryland, known for its rich horse racing heritage and as home to one of the Triple Crown jewels, is opening several horse farms to the public on May 10 ahead of the Preakness Stakes. These farms will educate visitors on the significance of horses to the state’s economy and history, highlighting Maryland’s status as a leading horse state with about 95,000 horses statewide. The equine industry contributes $2.9 billion to Maryland’s economy, with horses found in every county and Baltimore City, ranging from miniature pets to thoroughbreds bred for racing.
The Maryland Horse Farm Tour features over a dozen farms across multiple counties, including Northview Farm with a petting zoo, Winbak Farm with Standardbred racehorses and miniature horses, and Days End Farm Horse Rescue, which focuses on equine welfare. The self-guided tour is free but requires registration and offers additional attractions like food trucks and local vendors. Visitors are encouraged to explore Maryland’s local restaurants, breweries, orchards, and wineries along the way, making it a comprehensive cultural and equestrian experience.
