The 2026 spring thoroughbred racing season at Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs concluded after 28 days of live racing, generating over $20 million in wagers—a 38% increase from the previous year. The season started nearly two months earlier in January to avoid weather delays and better accommodate local trainers, resulting in only three rescheduled race days. This early start attracted more Oklahoma and out-of-state horsemen, leading to larger fields and increased betting activity. Highlights included Classy Empire being named Horse of the Meet, jockey David Cabrera leading with 57 wins, and trainer Scott Young earning Trainer of the Meet honors.
The season wrapped up on May 2 with the Roger F. Engel and Will Rogers Stakes handicap races, alongside Kentucky Derby Day festivities including a Derby Hat contest. The addition of live racing on Arkansas Derby Day helped boost attendance and wagering, contributing to a successful season. Cherokee Casino Will Rogers Downs continues to serve as a key venue for thoroughbred and quarter horse racing in northeast Oklahoma, offering on- and off-track betting and live entertainment.
