West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey has signed Senate Bill 1060, signaling support for the state’s horse racing industry by updating laws to include certified thoroughbred horses and increasing the funding cap for restricted races from $1 million to $2 million. The bill allows horses that have resided in West Virginia for six months to compete for larger purses, aiming to attract out-of-state horse owners to relocate to the state.
Additionally, the legislation permits licensed racing associations to broadcast races with a portion of wagers contributing to the West Virginia Thoroughbred Development Fund. These changes, effective June 7, are expected to bolster the horse racing scene at venues such as the Mountaineer Racetrack and Resort and the Hollywood Casino in Charles Town.
