On May 2 at Churchill Downs, T O Elvis made history as the first Japanese-trained horse to win an American Grade 1 dirt sprint, capturing the Churchill Downs Stakes with a dominant 3 1/4-length victory. This milestone was celebrated widely in Japan, signaling growing confidence in Japanese horses competing on American dirt tracks. Trainer Daisuke Takayanagi, who has been pioneering Japanese participation in U.S. races beyond the traditional Breeders’ Cup and Kentucky Derby, sees this win as a breakthrough that could encourage more Japanese involvement in American racing, despite regulatory and logistical challenges.
This success builds on recent Japanese achievements in the U.S., including Breeders’ Cup wins by Loves Only You and Marche Lorraine, and Forever Young’s strong Kentucky Derby and Breeders’ Cup Classic performances. With limited top-level dirt sprint races in Japan, American Grade 1 races offer valuable opportunities for Japanese horses. Owner Tomoya Ozasa now views T O Elvis as a more valuable stallion prospect, and plans are shifting toward targeting the Breeders’ Cup Sprint later this year. The victory not only enhances T O Elvis’s international reputation but also fuels hopes that eased regulations could lead to more regular Japanese participation in U.S. racing in the future.
