Always a Runner, a daughter of Gun Runner trained by Chad Brown and ridden by Jose Ortiz, captured a decisive 1 1/4-length victory in the $1.5 million Kentucky Oaks (G1) at Churchill Downs. Overcoming a serious health setback at age two, the filly made a remarkable comeback with just two prep races before the Oaks, including a maiden win at Tampa Bay Downs and a Gazelle Stakes (G3) victory at Aqueduct. Owned by Douglas Scharbauer and Three Chimneys Farm, the win was especially meaningful given the family’s rich racing history and the filly’s challenging journey back to peak form.
The 2024 Kentucky Oaks was notable for its prime-time evening start, aiming to broaden national viewership and highlight women’s health initiatives. Always a Runner’s victory not only underscored her resilience and talent but also marked a significant achievement for her connections, including trainer Chad Brown who carefully managed her return to racing. The race featured strong competition, with Meaning finishing second and Counting Stars third, but Always a Runner’s late rally secured a memorable win in the historic event.
