The San Diego Humane Society (SDHS) has rescued over 700 animals from the Villa Chardonnay property in Julian, California, following allegations of neglect and poor conditions. The rescued animals include cats, dogs, horses, mini ponies, donkeys, goats, and various birds. Many animals were found suffering from malnutrition, untreated wounds, and infections, with some in such critical condition that euthanasia was necessary. The Humane Farming Association (HFA) conducted a yearlong investigation that revealed severe neglect, including animals kept in substandard pens and an ammonia-filled barn. Rescued farm animals are being relocated to HFA’s sanctuary in Elk Creek for permanent care.
Villa Chardonnay and its owner Monika Kerber have faced multiple lawsuits related to animal neglect, including a significant legal battle with the Ark Watch Foundation. Court rulings ordered the return of animals to their original owners after evidence of abuse and hoarding was uncovered. Despite court orders, Kerber resisted compliance, leading to sheriff intervention and further legal consequences, including a $2.3 million judgment against her. The ongoing rescue and legal actions highlight serious concerns about animal welfare at Villa Chardonnay and efforts to provide the animals with safety and rehabilitation.
