The 151st Preakness Stakes, Maryland’s premier horse racing event, was held at Laurel Park instead of its traditional Pimlico Race Course location, drawing thousands of enthusiastic fans. The race saw the two-year-old Napoleon Solo, ridden by jockey Paco Lopez, win the second leg of the Triple Crown, beating local favorite Taj Mahal. Attendees embraced the event’s festive traditions, including fashionable attire and fascinators, contributing to a lively atmosphere distinct from previous years.
However, the event also faced protests from animal rights advocates who condemned the horse racing industry for its cruelty and reliance on taxpayer subsidies. The protests followed the recent death of a three-year-old colt, Hit Zero, at Laurel Park, highlighting ongoing concerns about horse safety. While the Maryland Racing Commission defended the state’s safety record, critics pointed to the high number of horse fatalities at Maryland tracks, with over 400 deaths reported in the past 12 years.
