The Next Chapter Rescue and Rehoming Centre in Countesthorpe, Leicestershire, is facing potential closure due to soaring costs and an influx of horses being surrendered by owners who can no longer afford their care. Owner Shelley Page highlighted the severe financial strain caused by rising hay prices, veterinary bills, and the increasing number of horses needing shelter, including costly young colts requiring extensive medical care. Despite being at full capacity with 36 horses, the charity continues to take in animals in need, often collaborating with larger organizations like Blue Cross to manage the overload.
Shelley emphasized the emotional and financial challenges of running a self-funded charity amid the current economic pressures, noting that many owners prioritize their families over their horses, which adds to the charity’s burden. To survive, The Next Chapter is urgently seeking to raise £5,000 to cover essential hay supplies for the coming winter, as they are still recovering from last year’s catastrophic costs. Without this support, the future of the charity—and its ability to care for vulnerable horses—remains uncertain.
