Leicestershire Horse Rescue Charity Faces Closure Amid Rising Costs and Increased Surrenders

The Next Chapter Rescue and Rehoming Centre, a horse and pony charity in Leicestershire, is facing potential closure due to soaring costs and an influx of animals being surrendered by owners who can no longer afford their care. Owner Shelley Page highlighted that rising hay prices, vet bills, and the increasing number of horses needing rescue—especially costly young colts—have placed immense financial strain on the self-funded charity. Currently caring for 36 horses, the centre is overwhelmed and has had to collaborate with larger charities like Blue Cross to manage the overflow.

Shelley emphasized the emotional difficulty of turning away animals in need despite limited resources, noting that the charity urgently needs to raise £5,000 to cover hay supplies for the coming winter. The rising cost of living has forced many owners to prioritize their families over their horses, exacerbating the charity’s challenges. Without sufficient funding and community support, The Next Chapter Rescue and Rehoming Centre’s future remains uncertain, threatening the welfare of many vulnerable horses.
