Mustang Valley Sanctuary Hosts Feral Horse Handling Clinic with Trainer Nelson Detweiler

Mustang Valley Sanctuary in Fulton recently hosted a hands-on course led by experienced horse trainer Nelson Detweiler, focusing on teaching participants how to safely touch, halter, and handle the feet of rescued mustangs. Detweiler worked patiently with several horses, including the more challenging Lola and George Clooney, using gradual desensitization techniques to help them overcome their fear of ropes and halters—tools associated with their capture from the wild. His approach emphasized calm persistence, allowing the horses to become comfortable at their own pace without force or rush.

Founded by Mary DeBonis, Mustang Valley Sanctuary cares for 31 horses and prioritizes letting them live naturally. The sanctuary is accredited by multiple organizations and supported by community donations and volunteers. Following the success of this clinic, Mustang Valley plans to continue hosting educational events, including an upcoming clinic with renowned trainer Brittani Mayer, aiming to build a network of Mustang trainers in the Northeast and launch a trainer challenge in 2026.
