Massive Rescue Operation Underway for Hundreds of Animals at Julian Sanctuary

A large-scale rescue operation is underway at Villa Chardonnay Horses with Wings, a sanctuary near Julian, where hundreds of animals—including over 150 horses, alpacas, donkeys, more than 150 cats, and 30 dogs—are being removed following a criminal investigation initiated in April. The San Diego Humane Society, which now has legal ownership of the animals after a judge’s order, is leading the multi-agency effort to assess and provide medical care to the animals, many of which are in varying health conditions. The sanctuary, founded by Monika Kerber who insists the animals were well cared for, has faced financial difficulties, including a bankruptcy filing last year.

The rescue involves dozens of staff and partners from multiple humane organizations and is expected to take several days, with the Humane Society operating beyond capacity and requesting community support through donations. Authorities emphasize that the animals are in protective custody and ask the public not to interfere with the ongoing investigation and rescue efforts. A dedicated webpage has been set up to facilitate donations and help owners identify if their animals are at the sanctuary.
