On May 1, 2026, a large-scale animal welfare intervention took place at Villa Chardonnay, Horses With Wings, Inc., a 20-acre rural sanctuary in Julian, led by the San Diego Humane Society (SDHS) and the County of San Diego Department of Animal Services (DAS). Following an investigation and legal authorization to enter the property, authorities executed a search warrant supported by multiple agencies to rescue and provide medical care for hundreds of animals, including approximately 165 horses, over 150 cats, 30 dogs, and various other species. The sanctuary, which has faced financial difficulties and allegations of embezzlement in the past, was found to be in foreclosure with significant unpaid debts, and ownership of the animals was legally transferred to SDHS to coordinate their care and relocation.
The rescue operation is described as a historic logistical challenge due to the sheer number and variety of animals involved, requiring specialized transport and long-term care resources beyond the capacity of individual agencies. SDHS is leading the effort with mutual aid from other humane organizations across California. The community is urged to assist through donations and volunteer support as local shelters are already operating over capacity. The situation has sparked mixed reactions locally, with some defending the sanctuary’s care for the animals despite the financial and legal troubles that precipitated the intervention. Updates and ways to help are available on the SDHS website.
