John L. Greer, co-owner of Kern’s Bakery, experienced a remarkable moment in horse racing history when his horse, Foolish Pleasure, won the Kentucky Derby in 1975. Purchased in 1973 for $20,000, Foolish Pleasure’s victory was a stunning achievement, marking the 11th win in a 12-race career. Greer’s passion for horse racing began in childhood and deepened after a serious illness in 1954, which inspired him to pursue his interests more fully. His earlier horse, Ridan, had also competed in the Kentucky Derby but without success.
The 1975 Derby win was a deeply emotional and proud moment for Greer, who credited the horse, jockey Jacinto Vasquez, and trainer Leroy Jolley for the triumph. Foolish Pleasure’s legacy endures, with the horse honored in the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. Greer passed away in 1980, but his connection to this iconic victory remains a celebrated part of Knoxville’s sporting history.
