Kazakhstan has established a new national holiday on September 3 called the Day of the Kazakh Tazy and Tobet, honoring two of the country’s historic dog breeds known for their speed, endurance, and intelligence. This initiative is part of a broader government effort to preserve Kazakhstan’s cultural and biological heritage, supported by scientific research that confirmed the breeds’ ancient origins and unique genetics. Measures such as a national DNA database, genetic passports, and gene pool preservation technologies have been implemented, with over 600 dogs genetically certified so far.
The Tazy breed gained international recognition in 2024 from the Fédération Cynologique Internationale, boosting global awareness and protection efforts. Officials emphasize that the holiday symbolizes a commitment to safeguarding Kazakhstan’s natural and cultural legacy, ensuring these iconic breeds endure for future generations. Combining science, tradition, and national pride, the new holiday aims to celebrate and promote Kazakhstan’s rich heritage through its treasured dog breeds.
