Healing with Horses: Centaur Stride’s Equine Therapy Program Supports Children with Disabilities

Centaur Stride, founded in 1990, offers equine-assisted therapy to support individuals with disabilities, addressing gaps in essential services like physical and occupational therapy that are increasingly difficult to access due to financial constraints and insurance limitations. Their E.A.S.E. Growth Program, in partnership with the Mental Health Association of Chautauqua County, provides affordable therapeutic riding lessons led by trained professionals and volunteers, emphasizing the physical, emotional, and social benefits of horse interaction. The organization keeps fees low to ensure accessibility and relies heavily on donations, grants, and fundraising events such as their annual Walk-a-Thon, which recently raised over $6,400.

The program’s inclusive approach serves riders with and without disabilities, fostering community and compassion among families, caregivers, and volunteers who witness the transformative impact of the therapy. Centaur Stride continues to expand its offerings and community engagement through events like Glow Bingo, supported by local sponsors, underscoring their mission that it truly “takes a whole village to raise a child” and making every child’s growth and well-being a shared priority.
