Hawthorne Race Course has resumed racing on April 19 for the first time since filing for bankruptcy protection in late February, managing to host seven races despite financial uncertainties and last-minute regulatory approvals. The track, which will race twice weekly on Sundays and Thursdays, faced challenges including securing a surety bond for pari-mutuel taxes, but received court and Illinois Racing Board support to proceed. Officials praised the cooperation of horsemen and remain optimistic about filling future race cards.
While restarting racing is a crucial step toward financial recovery, Hawthorne still awaits court approval to access a $15 million bankruptcy loan and finalize its budget. The track and creditors continue to seek investors to pay debts, fund operations, and develop a long-delayed racino, or alternatively consider selling the property for redevelopment. Since the 2021 closure of Arlington International Racecourse, Hawthorne remains the only active racetrack in the Chicago area.
