Gem Project Sanctuary: A Healing Haven for Rescued Animals and Youth Empowerment

The Gem Project Sanctuary, located on a 14-hectare farm near Melkbosstrand, provides a healing environment for abused and unwanted animals, currently caring for 65 dogs, 21 horses, and two donkeys. Founded by Juliet Jarvis, the sanctuary grew from her earlier work with rescued dogs positively impacting youth in Gqeberha. The sanctuary not only rehabilitates traumatized animals and prepares them for adoption but also trains some dogs as therapy and medical support animals, while engaging young people in animal care and training.

Despite its success, the sanctuary faces ongoing challenges in finding permanent homes for its animals and securing sufficient resources. It relies heavily on public support through donations, volunteering, and adoptions, with urgent needs including food, veterinary care, blankets, and cleaning supplies. The sanctuary also offers a private dog park for public hire, with proceeds supporting rescued animals. Jarvis emphasizes the sanctuary’s role as a loving haven for vulnerable animals and encourages the community to visit, support, and adopt from the sanctuary.
