From Jockey to Breeder: Willow Olivier’s Journey to Producing Namibia’s Next Generation of Champion Horses

Willow Olivier, once a prominent jockey known for his grit and instinct on the racetrack, has transitioned into a successful horse breeder in the Rehoboth area, applying his extensive racing experience to develop future champions. Coming from a family deeply rooted in horse racing, Olivier began breeding horses while still riding and has since expanded his stock to include thoroughbreds from South Africa. Despite an injury ending his jockey career, he remains passionate about the sport, now focusing on breeding, taming, and training horses, as well as mentoring new riders.

Olivier cherishes the connections and recognition horse racing has brought him both nationally and internationally, particularly in neighboring countries like Botswana and South Africa. While he enjoys the rewards of breeding and training, he acknowledges the challenges, such as the heartbreak of horses getting injured during training. His ultimate dream is to see the Namibian Horse Racing Association and the sport itself grow and gain wider international acclaim.
