Farm Sanctuary Leads Historic Rescue and Rehabilitation of Cockfighting Roosters

In 2025, authorities dismantled a large cockfighting ring in Pennsylvania, rescuing around 300 chickens subjected to brutal fighting conditions. While many rescued roosters often face euthanasia due to their injuries and trauma, a coalition of sanctuaries—including Good Sprout Rescue and Sanctuary, Sweet Peace Farm Sanctuary, and Farm Sanctuary—collaborated to provide intensive care and permanent homes for nearly all the birds. Farm Sanctuary notably completed its longest rescue transport ever, driving over 30 hours in winter to relocate nine chickens to new sanctuaries across the Midwest and West Coast.

Among the rescued birds, a rooster named Creamsicle became a symbol of hope and recovery. After months of care, he found a permanent home at Farm Sanctuary in New York, where he quickly adapted and charmed a group of hens with his dancing and strutting. Creamsicle’s transformation from a life of cruelty to one of safety and happiness highlights the dedication of sanctuaries to not only rescue but also rehabilitate and advocate for farm animals, emphasizing the need for systemic change beyond rescue efforts.
