Equestrians are being urged to fully understand legal towing weight limits after confusion arose from a police social media post that incorrectly explained trailer towing weights. The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency emphasized that drivers must ensure their vehicle and trailer operate within the manufacturer’s specified gross train weight (GTW) and maximum authorised mass (MAM) limits, which include the combined weight of the vehicle, trailer, horses, passengers, and equipment. Drivers are encouraged to verify weights using local weighbridges to maintain safety and legality.
Experts warn that exceeding towing capacities can severely impact vehicle handling, braking, and steering, posing risks to both horses and other road users, and may also invalidate insurance. Regular maintenance and checks of the towbar and trailer, including brakes, chassis, and electrics, are crucial to prevent failures that could lead to serious accidents. The National Trailer and Towing Association stresses the importance of adhering to weight limits and recommends annual towbar inspections and trailer servicing for horse owners.
