Emergency Responders Rescue 20-Year-Old Appaloosa Horse from Floodwaters in Illinois

Emergency responders and a local veterinarian successfully rescued a 20-year-old Appaloosa horse named Troy from 15-foot deep floodwaters in Coon Creek, Illinois, after he was swept away by fast-moving waters following a severe rainstorm. The complex eight-hour operation involved nearly 50 personnel, including the Wisconsin Large Animal Emergency Response team, who used a specialized raft to reach and secure Troy approximately 600 feet from shore. Equine veterinarian Nicky Wessel provided critical medical care on-site, treating Troy for early hypothermia and stabilizing him for transport.

After being guided across the creek and loaded into a horsebox, Troy was reunited with his owner, Ashley Beaulieu, who expressed relief that the horse survived despite nearly giving up during the ordeal. Veterinary staff continued his recovery with warm water, hay, and medication, and Troy has since returned to his home barn in stable condition, now grazing and recuperating from the traumatic event.
