Erik Mackechnie-Guire, judge for mountain and moorland (M&M) mini and working hunter ponies at the 2025 Horse of the Year Show (HOYS), brings extensive experience from his lifelong involvement with native pony breeds. Starting with a Shetland pony in his teens and progressing through a career that includes advanced dressage competition, coaching para-equestrian teams, and judging at major UK events, Erik is deeply knowledgeable about pony conformation, movement, and breed standards. He currently breeds Highland ponies and serves on multiple breed society panels.
At HOYS, Erik will focus on the pony’s type, confirmation, and way of going, assessing the pony, the child rider, and the overall harmony between them. He emphasizes the importance of ponies looking fit and able to perform their job well, with handlers showing good knowledge and care. Erik encourages competitors to present themselves positively and reminds them that showing is subjective but rewarding, especially at such a prestigious event.
