The Marwari Horse: A Rare Breed with a Fiery Temperament

The Marwari horse, a rare breed known for its hot temperament, is considered one of the best in the world. Despite their excellent performance in sports events like Andrews Race, Marwari horses are not used in polo due to their temper and lack of trainers in the country. Thoroughbred horses from abroad are used in polo games in the Marwar region of Rajasthan instead.

Marwari horses are identified by their inward-bent ears, thin legs, and strong hooves, allowing them to run fast over long distances. Raised in the Malani region of Rajasthan, Marwari horses are known for their loyalty, bravery, and intelligence. The breed has a rich history of heroic exploits in medieval wars and is traditionally found in villages like Nagar, Gudha, and Jasol.

Despite their popularity and demand, Marwari horses are rarely used in sports in India. The Jodhpur Horse Club organizes a horse show every year to showcase the breed and inspire youth to ride horses. The breed has been celebrated in literature and history, with famous horses like Maharana Pratap’s ‘Chetak’ and Amar Singh Rathore’s ‘Udal’ being mentioned for their heroic feats.
