New Zealand’s Monica Spencer and her Thoroughbred gelding Artist defied conventional wisdom by taking the lead in the Kentucky Three-Day Event CCI5*-L dressage phase with a score of 22.3. Close behind are fellow Kiwi Tim Price on Vitali and Great Britain’s Tom McEwen on Brookfield Quality. Spencer praised Artist’s expressiveness and trainability in dressage, highlighting the Thoroughbred’s advantage in the cross-country phase. The competition now shifts focus to the challenging cross-country course designed by Derek di Grazia, which riders describe as a true five-star test demanding precision and stamina.
In the CCI4*-S division, Tamie Smith maintains her lead with Danito after dressage, though her margin has narrowed with Sharon White and Elizabeth Barratt close behind. White expressed optimism about her horse Claus 63’s progress and the demanding nature of the Kentucky course, while Barratt, part of Britain’s “Rising Lions” program, is enjoying her first U.S. experience and the supportive atmosphere. The event continues with cross-country on Saturday and concludes with show jumping on Sunday.
