At the Defender Kentucky Three-Day Event in Lexington, Kentucky, only four horses managed double-clear rounds on Derek Di Grazia’s challenging five-star cross-country course. New Zealand’s Monica Spencer maintained her overnight lead with her 15-year-old Thoroughbred gelding, Artist, marking their sixth five-star clear round together. Spencer attributed their improved performance compared to a previous elimination to her increased maturity and strategic riding, focusing on jump approaches and timing. Despite Artist’s historical challenges in show jumping, they hold a strong position going into the final phase.
Will Coleman and his first-time five-star mount, Diabolo, delivered a double-clear round that moved them from fifth to second place, impressing with the horse’s composure on a difficult course. Caroline Pamukcu and HSH Blake, with just two time penalties, sit third, crediting prior experience on similar courses for their readiness. Other notable double-clears included Great Britain’s David Doel and Australia’s Sophia Hill, who made significant leaderboard gains. The event continues with horse inspections scheduled for Sunday morning before the final jumping phases.
