The Scott County Fire Department (SCFD) recently conducted specialized training for large animal rescue, a complex and technical operation they handle about six times annually. Using horse mannequins placed in challenging scenarios like trenches and mud pits, firefighters practiced with equipment such as pulley systems and prusik knots to safely hoist animals weighing up to 2,000 pounds. The training emphasizes practical, durable techniques suited for difficult environments, reflecting the rural nature of Scott County with its numerous horse and cattle farms.
SCFD’s large animal rescue capabilities are relatively unique in the region, positioning the department as a key resource and partner for neighboring counties. By collaborating with other local fire departments, SCFD fosters strong interdepartmental relationships that enhance mutual support during rescues. This teamwork is especially important given the volunteer nature and limited budgets of many area fire services, ensuring effective responses to large animal emergencies across the region.
