San Diego Humane Society Conducts Largest Animal Rescue in History at Neglected Julian Sanctuary

An unprecedented animal rescue operation has taken place at the Villa Chardonnay sanctuary in Julian, where hundreds of animals—including 334 cats, 30 dogs, and various farm animals—were found in severe neglect, suffering from malnutrition, injuries, and diseases. The San Diego Humane Society (SDHS), in partnership with local and national welfare agencies, intervened after years of complaints and the property owner’s bankruptcy allowed access. The conditions uncovered included overcrowded and unsanitary enclosures, lack of medical care, and violations of confinement laws. Several animals were humanely euthanized due to their critical conditions, despite the sanctuary’s no-kill policy.

The investigation is ongoing, with SDHS pushing for stronger regulatory oversight of private sanctuaries in California. While many rescued animals remain too fragile for adoption, shelters are encouraging the public to adopt available animals to free resources for those needing intensive care. Previous owners can also seek reunification through SDHS. Authorities emphasize the complexity and duration of the legal process but affirm their commitment to ensuring animal welfare and accountability.
