Heather Fitzgerald, a 54-year-old woman from Upper Bucks, is facing felony animal cruelty charges after failing to provide veterinary care for her 11-year-old thoroughbred gelding, Brazillant, who was suffering from aggressive eye cancer that had spread extensively. Despite raising the horse since he was four and attempting to rehome him, Fitzgerald treated his injuries herself due to financial constraints and did not seek professional medical help. When the Bucks County SPCA investigated, they found Brazillant in severe pain, thin, and unable to walk properly due to the cancer’s progression. Specialists determined euthanasia was the most humane option.
Fitzgerald was arrested and charged with aggravated cruelty to animals and misdemeanor neglect, held on $150,000 bail. The Bucks County SPCA emphasized that early veterinary intervention could have prevented the cancer’s spread and urged the public to report suspected animal mistreatment. Donations to support animals rescued from cruelty can be made through the SPCA’s Animal Relief Fund.
