The Pearl River County Sheriff’s Department recently conducted a hands-on K9 first aid class to enhance emergency care skills for police dog handlers. Led by veterinarian Amanda Foxworth and involving K9 handlers from the Picayune Police Department, the training focused on practical scenarios such as applying leg wraps and casts, preventing heat-related illnesses, and managing ingestion of harmful substances. The course also addressed handling injured or uncooperative dogs in high-stress situations, providing deputies with valuable real-world experience.
K9 units Diller and Nitro participated as demonstration animals, helping to simulate realistic treatment conditions. The training covered common injuries and health issues affecting working dogs, underscoring the department’s dedication to the safety and well-being of its K9 partners, who are vital to law enforcement efforts.
