Thoroughbred horse racing has returned to Mountaineer Casino Racetrack and Resort in Chester, W.Va., with a revamped season featuring a more competitive field, new trainers, and increased purses. Racing will take place Sunday through Tuesday, expanding to Wednesdays in July, with a 7 p.m. post time. A notable change this year is the rescheduling of the West Virginia Derby to August 9, aimed at attracting higher-caliber horses by avoiding conflicts with other major derby races. Track officials are also planning family-friendly events, such as dachshund and corgi races, to enhance the live experience.
Fans and officials alike emphasize the unique appeal of attending races in person, valuing the atmosphere and excitement that online betting cannot replicate. Attendees encourage others to visit during the busy season and the derby, as the track works to rebuild live crowd energy and foster a vibrant racing community.
