Kentucky Derby Alumni Face Off in $1.25 Million Oaklawn Handicap Showdown

The upcoming Oaklawn Handicap (G2) on April 18 features a competitive six-horse field including notable Kentucky Derby alumni Sovereignty and Journalism, who finished first and second respectively in the 2025 Derby at Churchill Downs. Also in the race are Publisher and White Abarrio, both Derby participants with less distinguished finishes. White Abarrio, the richest entrant with over $7.7 million in earnings and a 2023 Breeders’ Cup Classic win, is the 7-2 third choice on the morning line, while Publisher, on a three-race winning streak at Oaklawn, is a 15-1 longshot.

This race marks a rare gathering of top older dirt route horses outside of the Breeders’ Cup Classic, with White Abarrio and Publisher having recent local success despite neither Sovereignty nor Journalism having raced at Oaklawn before. Trainer Steve Asmussen is optimistic about Publisher’s chances despite facing the country’s best older horses, highlighting the horse’s current form and fitness compared to others coming off layoffs. The $1.25 million purse and high-quality field underscore Oaklawn Park’s growing prominence in attracting elite competition.
