Moira: The Champion Mare Who Defied Expectations

Moira, a classy Canada mare, is set to be named champion turf female of 2024 after a popular victory in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf. Despite being purchased as a broodmare prospect, there is speculation that Moira may continue her racing career in 2025, with the breeding season in Australia not beginning until September.

Trained by Kevin Attard, Moira has had a successful career, breaking records and winning prestigious races. Despite having a strong dirt influence in her bloodlines, she has never run a race on dirt. Her recent victory in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf solidifies her as a top contender for Canada’s horse-of-the-year title.

Moira’s future remains uncertain as she may come back to race as a 6-year-old in the U.S., Canada, or Australia before beginning her new career as a broodmare. Despite not qualifying for the horse-of-the-year award in Canada for 2024 due to the stipulation of having made at least three starts in Canada, Moira’s impressive career achievements make her a standout in the racing world.
