The Preakness Festival Maryland Horse Farm Tour, taking place this Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore 16 horse farms across six counties, showcasing champion horses, foals, and Maryland’s rich heritage in horse racing and breeding. Attendees can interact with thoroughbreds, learn about their breeding and training, and enjoy various activities including food trucks, a farm brewery at Willowdale Farm, petting zoos, and even the chance to name a foal. The event is free but requires an RSVP.
Dr. Michael Harrison, co-owner of Willowdale Farm, highlights that this time of year is special as many mares come to foal and their offspring are raised on-site until ready for training. Anne Litz, executive director of the Maryland Horse Industry Board, emphasizes the excitement surrounding Preakness and the importance of the horses to the festival. The self-guided tour encourages visitors to bring picnic blankets and prepare for all weather conditions, promising a family-friendly celebration of Maryland’s equestrian legacy.
