Kanawha County’s Camp Virgil Tate has unveiled a new equestrian facility after nearly a decade of planning, featuring three pole barns with portable stalls, a show ring, riding ring, and recreational space. Funded by the Kanawha County Commission and the Southern District Horse Camp, the project incorporates original wood from the camp’s old barn and was completed with volunteer help. The facility aims to enhance the 4-H experience by providing youth with opportunities to learn horse care, trail riding, roping, rodeo, and barrel racing.
The equestrian complex will primarily serve campers but will also be available for public rental for events like weddings and parties. The official public opening is scheduled for May 9, with festivities including food trucks, a horse show, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony. The new facility is expected to boost community engagement and support 4-H’s mission of youth development by offering expanded equine activities.
