Japan’s T O Elvis made a stunning U.S. debut by winning the $939,600 Churchill Downs Stakes (G1) on May 2, overcoming a strong field of top American sprinters and milers. Bred in Kentucky and trained by Daisuke Takayanagi, T O Elvis raced wide but surged past rivals to win by 3 1/4 lengths under jockey Ryusei Sakai. This victory marked the first Grade 1 win for his sire Volatile and showcased T O Elvis’s dominant form following a four-race winning streak in Japan, including a decisive Capella Stakes (G3) victory.
The race favorite, Knightsbridge, who entered off a four-race win streak, faded to sixth, while Disruptor and Crazy Mason finished second and third, respectively. Owner Tomoya Ozasa expressed great joy in winning with his only Kentucky-bred horse, and Takayanagi hinted at a possible return to Kentucky for the Breeders’ Cup Sprint later this year. T O Elvis’s pedigree includes notable horses like Volatile and Curlin, emphasizing his strong bloodline and promising future in U.S. racing.
