The 2026 Barley Saturday in Cardigan drew thousands to celebrate a vibrant parade of horses, led by the Welsh section D stallion Ionos Brenin Elwyn, who had been crowned supreme champion earlier that day. Owned by Sarah Hughes and shown by her son Daniel, Elwyn’s victory was especially meaningful to the family, with deep local ties and a legacy of success—his sire, Ionos Llion, was supreme champion in 2017. Elwyn, who began showing at age 10, has become a beloved figure, inspiring family involvement and joy over the past three years.
In addition to Elwyn’s triumph, Decland Davies earned reserve supreme with his traditional stallion Steppers Big Batman, while Jack Davies and John Fletcher won categories for private exercise vehicles and heavy horse turnout, respectively. The event also featured a parade of nearly 100 vintage vehicles, underscoring Barley Saturday’s unique blend of equestrian tradition and community celebration.
