Heroic Rescue Saves Horse Stranded in Floodwaters Near Chicago

After being stranded 600 feet from shore in 15 feet of fast-moving floodwaters on a small peninsula near Chicago, a hypothermic horse named Troy faced a dire situation. Local fire and rescue crews, alongside a veterinarian who braved the dangerous currents, coordinated a complex rescue operation. Nearly two dozen responders from multiple agencies united through the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System, combining their expertise to reach and care for the horse on-site.

The team carefully guided Troy through the turbulent waters to safety, where he was transported for further care. Thanks to the dedication and teamwork of swiftwater technicians, firefighters, and volunteers, Troy survived the ordeal and has since returned home, happily grazing in his barn. The Marengo Fire & Rescue District publicly acknowledged the collaborative effort that made the technically challenging rescue possible.
