A tiny duckling named Olivia was rescued by firefighters after falling into a drain while crossing a busy road in Hucknall, Nottinghamshire, with her mother and siblings. The rescue was prompted by concerned members of the public and local bodybuilder Kevin Cassidy, who helped stop traffic and assist the duck family. Steve Bonnington of Billy’s Hucknall Wildlife and Exotic Rescue, who named the duckling after one of the firefighters, is advocating for more duck-crossing signs and wildlife-friendly drain covers to prevent similar incidents.
Despite Bonnington’s efforts and applications for safer drains, Nottinghamshire County Council has only approved additional signage but declined installing new wildlife-safe drains, citing current safety standards. Bonnington emphasizes that improved signage and specially designed drain covers would protect not only ducks but also amphibians and small mammals from falling into drains, highlighting ongoing challenges in balancing wildlife safety with infrastructure requirements.
