Donna Barton Brothers, daughter of pioneering jockey Patti Barton, initially sought a different path but ultimately became a successful jockey from 1987 to 1998, ranking as the second-leading money earner among women at retirement. After marrying trainer Frank Brothers and retiring from riding, she transitioned into broadcasting, quickly adapting to the challenging role of an on-horseback reporter for NBC Sports starting in 2000. Known for her thorough preparation and insightful interviews, she has been widely praised for her work covering major races, including the Triple Crown.
Throughout her career, Barton Brothers has demonstrated resilience and dedication, overcoming early doubts and the male-dominated nature of horse racing. Beyond racing, she has contributed to the sport through mentoring young women and authoring a guide to horse racing. She announced she will retire from NBC Sports following the 2026 Preakness Stakes, concluding a remarkable 26-year broadcasting tenure.
