A 23-year-old Dalit groom, Golu Ahirwar, was violently attacked during his pre-wedding procession in Damoh when local men objected to him riding a horse through the village. The procession was deliberately blocked, and when the family sought passage, the confrontation escalated into an assault where the groom, who is physically challenged, and his relatives were beaten with sticks and clubs. The attackers also stole gold jewelry from the groom’s sister during the chaos. The family filed a police complaint, and authorities have registered a case under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, with efforts underway to identify and arrest the accused.
Following the incident, police deployed personnel in the village to maintain peace and ensure the wedding could proceed. After a medical examination, the groom continued with the wedding rituals in a nearby district. The case highlights ongoing caste-based discrimination and violence, with the police taking steps to hold the perpetrators accountable and prevent further tensions.
