Clean Escape Event at UVM Teaches Teens How to Prevent Germ Spread

The University of Vermont is hosting its first-ever Clean Escape event on May 30, 2026, at the Miller Research and Education Center. Aimed at 4-H’ers, FFA members ages 14-18, and UVM Summer CREAM students, participants will design and test protocols using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to prevent the spread of germs in a simulated facility. Teams will be scored based on how well they avoid transferring glow germ gel, visible only under ultraviolet light, between designated areas.

The event, led by Dr. Julie Smith and Wendy Sorrell, emphasizes understanding invisible germ transmission, a critical concept for working safely with animals, people, and plants. Registration is required and space is limited. Participants should bring creativity, problem-solving skills, and dress for the weather, as the venue is not climate-controlled. Additional details and accommodations are available through the event organizers, and a related informational episode will air on May 18, 2026.
