BLM Expands Wild Horse and Burro Adoption with New Off-Range Corrals in Eastern U.S.

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is expanding wild horse and burro adoption opportunities in the eastern U.S. by establishing new off-range corrals east of the Mississippi River. These facilities will provide safe, temporary care for animals gathered in the West, improve public access, and support adoption and sale events. With over one-third of nationwide adoptions occurring in eastern states, the new corrals will facilitate easier placement of animals into private care, saving taxpayers more than $15,000 per animal by reducing long-term government care costs.

The BLM plans to award contracts for facilities capable of housing up to 400 animals in multiple eastern regions, serving as holding locations, adoption viewing sites, and pick-up points for online and partner programs. Interested applicants must register through SAM.gov to submit proposals, with detailed solicitation documents available by region. Additional support and information are provided through BLM resources and local APEX Accelerators to assist in proposal preparation.
