A draft Resolution co-sponsored by multiple countries, including Austria, Brazil, China, and Russia, aims to establish July 11 as “World Horse Day,” starting in 2025. This initiative, led by Mongolia’s President Khurelsukh Ukhnaa, seeks to raise global awareness about the significance of horses, which currently number around 57 million worldwide and play vital roles in transportation, agriculture, and recreation.
The Resolution addresses the decline in horse populations and the equine industry, attributed to technological advancements, economic changes, and evolving lifestyles. It emphasizes the importance of preserving horse breeds and equine husbandry, particularly in cultures where horses hold historical and cultural significance, such as Mongolia’s nomadic communities.
Adopted with overwhelming support (169 votes in favor and 1 against), the Resolution invites Member States and stakeholders to engage in activities that highlight the economic and social importance of horses. It aims to promote public involvement in preserving equine heritage and supporting the equine industry, reflecting the deep-rooted connection between humans and horses throughout history.
