Volunteer Orientation Set for Therapeutic Horseback Riding Program in McCandless

Riding for the Handicapped of Western Pennsylvania (RHWPA) in McCandless offers a therapeutic horseback riding program for children with disabilities, operated entirely by volunteers. The program, free for participants as young as three, runs from mid-May to October and requires volunteers to assist as horse leaders or sidewalkers. Volunteers, who must be at least 14 years old, receive training and are matched with suitable horses and riders. The program has been praised for its positive impact on children, including improved behavior and increased confidence.

Founded in 1979 and inspired by therapeutic riding practices from England, RHWPA relies solely on donations, fundraising, and grants to provide its services. Longtime volunteers highlight the rewarding experience of seeing children thrive and gain pride through participation. An orientation for new volunteers is scheduled for May 2, with ongoing opportunities available throughout the season. More information can be found on their website or by contacting the organization directly.
