The Back Country Horsemen of the Croatan, a volunteer horseback riding group formed in 2013, maintain about 15 miles of trails at the Pine Cliff Recreation Area near the Cherry Branch ferry terminal in the Croatan National Forest. Meeting once or twice a month, they work to keep trails clear and accessible for horseback riders and other visitors, supporting the national Back Country Horsemen of America’s mission to preserve trail access across the country.
The group is currently seeking new riders to join their efforts and will host a meet-and-greet ride this Saturday for those interested in learning more and getting involved. Pine Cliff Recreation Area, located between Havelock and Harlowe, benefits from their ongoing volunteer trail maintenance, ensuring the area remains open and enjoyable for the public. More information is available on their website.
