The equine program at UConn has a long history and continues to grow, offering various programs and activities related to horses, including riding, breeding, and research. The program has a breeding program that focuses on quality foundation sport type Morgans, as well as Warmbloods and Quarter Horses. Students are involved in all aspects of the breeding process, from caring for pregnant mares to helping with foals’ births.
Students in the equine program have access to hands-on courses covering all aspects of horse science, from breeding to training. The program also offers opportunities for students to market and sell young horses, as well as a minor in equine sports rehabilitation. The courses are designed to prepare students for careers in the equine industry, such as equine veterinarian or stable owner.
Equine research at UConn focuses on horse physiology, maternal nutrition, and the fecal microbiome of horses. The research aims to provide evidence-based information for horse owners and managers to make better decisions regarding the health and well-being of their horses. The equine program also engages with the community through extension activities, offering online modules, clinics, and events for horse owners and riders in Connecticut.
