The Kamloops Therapeutic Riding Association (KTRA), a non-profit serving the Kamloops region since 1988, offers therapeutic riding programs for individuals with physical, neurological, developmental, or cognitive challenges. These programs pair riders with carefully selected horses whose natural walking motion aids in improving balance, coordination, muscle tone, and sensory processing. Led by certified instructors and supported by trained volunteers, the lessons provide not only physical benefits akin to physiotherapy but also significant social and emotional support, fostering confidence, independence, and a sense of community among participants of all ages.
Beyond physical therapy, therapeutic riding at KTRA creates meaningful connections between riders, horses, instructors, and volunteers, often becoming a vital source of social interaction and emotional growth. Families and participants report transformative experiences, highlighting increased comfort, acceptance, and joy. The association emphasizes safety through structured programming and medical clearance requirements, while relying heavily on community volunteers to sustain its impactful work. KTRA continues to be a valued resource, offering life-enhancing opportunities that extend well beyond horseback riding.
